The Mayor of Bulawayo, Councillor David Coltart has challenged residents associations across the country to intensify efforts towards climate change adaptation and mitigation.
He made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf at the annual residents’ summit hosted by the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) and the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) in Bulawayo.
Coltart said residents’ associations play a critical role in ensuring a sustainable future, especially in light of the threats of climate change.
“Climate change is an undeniable reality that poses significant threats to our environment, our health and our livelihoods. We must recognise that climate change knows no boundaries. It affects urban and rural communities alike. As residents of Bulawayo and Zimbabwe, we have a responsibility not only to mitigate its impacts but also to adapt our practices to ensure a sustainable future.
Together we can advocate for policies that promote renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and responsible water management,” said Coltart.
The annual residents’ summit focused on key issues that included climate change, devolution, water, sanitation and hygiene.
Coltart noted that the issues under discussion during the residents’ summit “are urgent challenges that demand our collective attention and action”.
“The WASH sector is fundamental to our well being and quality of life. Access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities should be a right not a privilege. As we gather here today, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to these essential services.
We must work together to advocate for improved infrastructure and sustainable practices that safeguard our health and environment,” said Coltart.
The residents’ annual summit was also attended by urban and rural local authorities from across the country.
